On March 11, 2012, sixteen actives participated in the 3rd annual Jog for Jill 5K to benefit lung cancer research. A large number of the groups participating represented individual Greek chapters as well as many of the athletic teams. As a team, the chapter raised, for the second year in a row, the most of any fraternity participating in the event, largely inspired by the belief that we have the ability, opportunity, and duty to serve our fellow human beings. The chapter certainly hopes to continue its successful participation in Jog for Jill for years to come.
Jill Costello, a UC Berkeley Kappa Kappa Gamma and coxswain for the national championship Cal Women Crew, coordinated the initial Jog for Jill which raised over $50,000 and involved over 1,000 participants – more people than any fundraising event in the history of lung cancer support. Jill was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer (the most advanced stage) in June 2009 and passed away in June 2010.
