A guiding light and steadying force for over forty years, it is hard to mention Delta Xi without also in some way referencing Ed. Beginning his service on the House Corporation in 1964, Ed has helped weather the many storms of Delta Xi. Indeed, Ed has witnessed and been closely involved with three different re-colonization efforts. Whether it was 1965, 1974, or 2001, Ed was there to provide a sense of continuity and help uphold the traditions of Phi Gamma Delta. Throughout this time Ed could also be counted on as a rallying leader for any Delta Xi event. Whether it be a Pig Dinner or fundraising effort, Ed was at the forefront gathering support from the masses to ensure the success of Delta Xi.
His constant volunteer involvement has not been limited to Phi Gamma Delta though. Ed has also been extremely involved in various Cal organizations. He has served as a director for the UC Alumni Association, a member of the Advisory Board for the Haas School of Business Young Entrepreneurs, and a member of the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee. He is a former president of the Big C Society and founding member of the Bear Backers. He also helped form and was president of Pappy’s Boys. His strong affinity towards athletic organizations is largely tied to his three years as a starting defensive end when he was part of the 1950 and ’51 Rose Bowl teams. He was also a 1952 Hula Bowl All-Star selection. Just to spice things up, he also started as breakaway for two years on the rugby squad.
Leadership seems to be a natural position for Ed and his professional success only reinforces that. After working as national sales manager for 3M Corp., Ed moved on to become the owner of Golden Bear Ford in Berkeley and Sun Valley Ford in Concord. Again, he was widely respected by his peers and became president of both the East Bay Motor Cars Assc. and Ford Dealers Assc. Northern California. Ultimately he was honored by Time magazine with the National Quality Dealer Award.
Widely admired in several different venues, Ed is a true treasure for Phi Gamma Delta. He is happily married to his wife Ann, with whom he has four children: Laurie, Debbi, Michael, and Barbara, and thirteen grandchildren.
